Disinfection, Chaos and Cellular Automata Subject Group

Introduction

Is disinfection chaotic? The sessions of the subject group were intended to explore this question, the problems encountered in disinfection testing and how Complexity Theory can lead to a better understanding. Follow the link to read more about the background to this question.

Agenda

All presentations are available to download or view online. Click on the links in the agenda below to view or download the presentations in Adobe PDF format

  1. Cellular Automata - how simple rules give complex results.
  2. Chaos Theory - insights from exploring deterministic chaos using computer modelling.
  3. Disinfection - Disinfectants need to disinfect. But do they?

Demonstration Programs

Four Delta has written a number of Java programs to help illustrate some of the concepts of chaos and complexity. These are available by clicking on the links below. Each link will open a page with information about the program and an explanation of how to use it.

The programs are launched using Java Web Start technology - once you have downloaded the programs, you can subsequently run them without being connected to the internet.

* The Logistic Map * The Lorentz Equations
* Random Number Generator Comparison * Biofilm Growth Simulation
* Disinfection Simulation

Note that when opening one of these programs with Java Webstart, you will see a warning dialog box similar to that below.

Java Webstart Warning

You must click "Yes" or "Always" to run the program.
